Protecting sleep while earning extra
Sleep is usually the first thing side work takes, because it's the most flexible part of the day. It's also the part that affects everything else, including your main job.
Signs it's slipping
- Going to bed later on side-work evenings
- Needing more coffee to get through the morning
- Small mistakes at the day job
Simple protections
Keep a fixed stop mark at least an hour before bed. Avoid starting demanding tasks late in the evening. Keep at least one evening a week completely free.
When to cut back
If sleep has slipped for two weeks in a row, reduce the side work rather than trying to push through. A smaller amount you can keep up is worth more than a larger amount that ends in exhaustion.
